Babraham Primary School
“The only way to learn mathematics, is to do mathematics.” Paul Halmos
At Babraham, we strive to build a love of mathematics and problem solving in every child. Through a maths mastery approach, the children are encouraged to explore problem solving activities using a wide variety of resources and methods. Significant time is given in daily lessons to ensure a thorough understanding of key concepts and calculation methods are fully embedded. This strong foundation of learning provides strength and confidence when the child approaches new tasks or more difficult questions, and supports them to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts covered.
Throughout all key stages of the school, pupils are inspired to work collaboratively and to build, draw and talk about how questions and problems can be solved. This style of learning boosts full understanding of the value of learning from one another. Children record their understanding in a range of different ways, and teachers make use of resources from a number of sources, including White Rose and Target Your Maths, to complement this. To support their learning, children have independent access to a range of practical resources suitable for their age, understanding and topic, such as number lines, bead strings, clocks, Numicon and base ten equipment.
In addition to this, children are encouraged to embrace their mistakes and realise that these can be positive learning opportunities; we can be courageous and try new things out and if a mistake is made, great learning can be developed.
We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of mathematical topics throughout each year, such as time, measurement, shape, fractions, ratio and statistics. Children are encouraged to see and explore the links between these topics, which again enhances learning, understanding and quick recall. To ensure progression of coverage and objectives across all year groups, staff make use of planning resources from both White Rose and Hamilton Trust.
Finally, a strong home/ school relationship supports the child to develop speed and accuracy in times tables and efficient mental calculations. We embrace this relationship as a way of helping the children see the significance of mathematics in their everyday lives, in the lives of adults and the workplace, and the contribution mathematics can make to our world.
